Does anyone have any experience of marketing a website offline... did it work?

I am working on a Photoshop tutorial site which will also sell an ebook on design, and I think I could get quite alot of visitors from advertising in a design magazine or something like that.

What do you think, also roughly how much do these magazines charge for a small ad at the back?
